What are you reading Monday 03Aug09
What are you reading Mondays is hosted by J. Kaye’s Book Blog
Completed this week: a fun murder mystery (Taken to the Cleaners) and an exciting recent Canadian entry (Jade Peony).
I’ve just finished reading these:
Taken to the Cleaners
by Dolores Johnson A Mandy Dyer mystery
Mysteries, especially themed such this one is, are my snack food of reading. My secret vice. This is the first one of this series that I’ve seen. “Mandy is making a go of [her late uncle’s Denver dry-cleaning company]…Then Betty the Bag Lady comes in with a man’s suit, slashed and stained with blood.”
2. The Jade Peony by Wayson Choy
Set in Vancouver’s Chinatown in the late 1930s and ’40s. Poignant novel told through the reminiscences of three children of an immigrant Chinese family. This is a wonderful book, the choice of this month’s Loquacious Compendium. I will post a complete review.
I’m currently reading these:
1. Hannah Fowler
First published in 1956, this work is the second in Giles’s series of historical novels on Kentucky, which includes The Kentuckians and The Believers.
I’ve never read any of Giles’ work but this was recommended by a friend whose judgment I trust.
2. The Full Plate Diet Subtitled: “Slim Down, Look Great, Be Healthy” ARC – book looks lovely & diet appears to be easy. More later.
Technorati Tags: Hannah Fowler, Janice Holt Giles, the Kentuckians series, Mandy Dyer, Taken to the Cleaners, Dolores Johnson, The Full Plate Diet, fiber diet, Stuart A. Seale M.D., Teresa Sherard M.D., Diana Fleming Ph.D. LDN, Loquacious Compendium, book club, reading group, Hanna’s Books
I look forward to reading more of the “The Full Plate Diet.” That’s something I need! 🙂
These all sound great — have a wonderful week of reading!
The Jade Peony sounds good. Have a good week!
Thanks for ordering the advance reading copy of the Full Plate Diet. I hope you enjoy reading through it as much as we have enjoyed giving all 20,000 copies away. We’d love to hear thoughts on the book. Take care.
