Prince Edward Island – the View from a Hammock

September10

PhotobucketWe had a weekend obligation in Summerside PEI, so we drove the two hours to Confederation Bridge which connects the island of Green Gable fame to the Canadian mainland.

The bridge is 12.9 kilometers (8 miles) long & if you’re a little nervous of bridges can be quite an ordeal. Thankfully, the water as we crossed over was calm & bright blue.

Art Gallery B&BDuring our visit, we stayed at the Art Gallery Bed & Breakfast in North Bedeque, just outside Summerside. In fact, it’s only about fifteen minutes past the bridge.

Arno & Linda Freitag were our warm & gracious hosts. Arno paints & does other artwork (see the inlaid table in the Parlour Room) and his paintings are hung throughout the house and can be purchased (thus the ‘art gallery’). (If you go, check out his “Geraniums in a Window” print.)

The Art Gallery B&B is in a beautifully renovated 1820 island home.

As we walked to the front door,

I noticed two hammocks strung between the trees. Lying in a hammock has been on my “100 things to do before I die” list for a dozen years or more and, strangely enough since we live in the country now, I’m in my sixth decade and had never done so.

The weather on the weekend was cool, and with the almost constant breeze/wind that blows across PEI, it was a little too cool for lying outside. But I was determined, and spent hours on Sunday afternoon and Monday morning wrapped in a blanket and looking at this (when my eyes were open).

If I moved my head a bit on the pillow, I saw this.

And if looked straight ahead (my foot is still in a cast, as you see):

It really was a most wonderful weekend and, to leave the island on the right note, we stopped at Cows Prince Edward Island for fortifications in the form of a raspberry chip double scoop in a chocolate dipped waffle cone before going over the bridge again. MMM…..

(And a good thing I was fortified, since the Strait was gray & choppy on the return trip.)

The point of this story? Even folks who live where they used to vacation need to get away once in awhile.
