Lobster Time!
One of the bonuses of our rural community is that it is on the Atlantic coast. (In Nova Scotia most of us are not far from the ocean. The province is very nearly an island.)
The government of Nova Scotia limits the fishing seasons and rotates them throughout the various areas of the province. Although lobster is being fished throughout the summer, the fisherman in our area have only May & June to haul them in. So lobster season is here on the North Shore!
The first couple of years we lived here, the lobster pound down in Barrachois Harbour (just across from where the boats dock) opened during the season, but it is no longer manned. So we found ourselves driving nearly an hour & a half to Chase’s Lobster Pound in Port Howe to get our fresh seafood.
This year, though, a neighbor of ours – just down the road – has opened the Lobster Time to sell the lobsters that her husband & father-in-law are fishing right now.
Business was brisk there this morning and Sherry is holding what’s known as a “canner” – a lobster under a pound. The very popular pound & one-quarter or pound & one-half crustaceans had sold out & she was waiting for another load fresh off the boat. She offers them live or pre-cooked.
We prefer the canners as the smaller lobsters have sweeter meat, and since we eat them the traditional Maritime way–cold with hot butter, bread & potato salad–we bought them cooked.
If you’re in the city, or inland, you won’t likely find your neighbor with a lobster shack on her front lawn. But fresh seafood is available by mail order, so you can take advantage of the season anyway. In the mood for seafood?
