Saturday Snapshot: On The Rock

My husband was on a business trip near Gros Morne National Park in Newfoundland last week and snapped lots of photos of caribou. I think they’re an unusual combination: they’re a type of deer, yet have the shoulders of a moose, and legs and a head that look like a horse (to me anyway).
What do you think?
More of the park. They don’t call Newfoundland “The Rock” for nothing.
What a beautiful park! It all looks so remote. Those caribou are interesting looking animals, aren’t they? I can certainly see some ‘horse’ in there as well.
The park is fairly remote, Trish. Maybe someone who knows horses better than I do wouldn’t see the similarity lol
The do have the head of a horse. I don’t think I’ve ever paid attention before your photos. Good job!
It sure look that way to me, Kaye – in several of the shots he took.
Gorgeous photos! I had no idea that Newfoundland had country like the second shot. How wonderful to be that close to a caribou!
Thanks, Louise! There are lots of caribou, but maybe the zoom makes it look than we were closer than we actually were.
They are neat looking.
Different, anyway, Nise 🙂
Are you sure they are not reideer? Just kidding they are cool.
Irene, the dictionary says they’re a species of reindeer. Sharp eyes!
I can’t escape the feeling that it ought to have moose antlers…my eye keeps wanting to fill them in above its head!
The male do have antlers of sorts, Cheryl, although not nearly as large as a moose rack.
What a beautiful place. Love these photos Debbie.
Yes, a strange, haunting kind of beauty, Diane. Glad you enjoyed the pics!
I had never realized the female caribou looked so much like a horse. At first I thought it was a horse. Newfoundland is a place I’ve never been but I think I should remedy that one day.
We love visiting Newfoundland, Barbara and can’t recommend it highly enough. Take lots of time, though as it’s BIG. You can spend weeks and never get off the Avalon Peninsula. Gros Morne is on the West coast of the province.
I’ve never really taken a close look at a caribou before. It does seem like a combination of animals.
I don’t think much about them usually, either, Leslie. Their habitat is a bit further north than we are.
Wow! That second picture with the rock mountains is stunning!
They’re unusual mountains, aren’t they, Alyce?
Caribou are reindeer, right?? And wow … that is some serious landscape. Was your husband looking for Santa’s workshop???
Yup, Mrs. J., caribou are a type of reindeer..I think there’s more snow at the North Pole 😉
I really enjoyed these photos. I’d love to see caribou in the wild!
