Moving a Library – Village Style!

April4

Some of you may remember my post last year about the building of the new library in Tatamagouche.

I thought I’d show you a little bit behind the scenes of moving a village library to its new premises.

Library,Tatamagouche

That old branch closed for good on March 17th.

The new premises are now complete and the official grand opening is next Wednesday. (April 11th). I can hardly wait to see inside!

Tata library - moving crew

No moving vans or professional crews – or even U-Hauls for us.

These are all volunteers.

For more photos of the move, click here.

I wasn’t able to help, but I love that community volunteers made this possible. It’s part of what makes rural living so great.

What do you think of our moving methods?

I love this. So many people were available and did volunteer. Even in Binghamton, NY, it was volunteers mainly who did the grunt work of moving their library to a new building. I’m looking forward to the day when we have our new one built but fundraising is still going on.

Barbara, We are blessed to have a new library in these days of cut-backs. I hope your fundraising is successful!

That’s how we moved books to the new location in the village where I grew up, Debbie!

I think it’s the most obvious way to make use of the maximum number of volunteers, Cathy – especially with only a short distance to go. I mean how far can it be if it’s still in the vilaage? 😉

Precisely. I walked back and forth to school (except in the worst part of winter). I lived on one side of the village, and the school was on the opposite side. Less than a mile one way, and I lived in one of the larger villages in the area.
